An Artist's Journey

As a young artist, Serino painted realistic portraits, landscapes and cityscapes. However, he soon discovered a passion for painting the wild animals that he encountered on the walks and bike rides he would embark on with his friends. The beauty, grandeur and variations in the natural world captured in his paintings invited him to explore more diverse subjects. After working for several years as an oil painter, Serino became interested in wildlife and began to focus on the American bison. One of his most famous works, entitled Bison in Yellowstone National Park, was inspired by that animals' appearance in the park. The painting won him a national award and is now part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. In this process, Serino also learned much about the American west and its cultural and historic connection with the desert Southwest.

Al Serino's Art of Inspiration

One of the most important aspects of painting is inspiration, which is usually obtained by observation or interacting with nature. However, the act of painting itself can yield inspiration. Serino sometimes starts his painting with a sketch, then incorporates different layers of ideas, feelings and connections to other paintings and artworks as he goes. If he wants to create a fantasy image, he might use an image from literature, a film or a mythology. In his words: "When you're painting, you are either inspired or you are not. If you allow yourself to fall into a state of inspiration, then what you're doing is actually painting. If you fall into a state of thoughtlessness, then you could use any image you want to paint." Serino uses many different media, including oil paint, watercolor, graphite, and various types of pastels; he is particularly fond of using pastels for his spiritual art prints.

Themes and Colors in Al Serino's Artworks

It is important to note that while Serino's artwork often incorporates themes of nature, artworks can also have a more abstract or colored meaning. In his abstract paintings, Serino often uses shades of red, yellow, orange, green and blue to create warm, vibrant and eye-catching images. In his colorful, fantasy-y abstracts, Serino often uses colorful and vibrant primary colors to create images that are striking and enticing. While many abstract painters use black and white, Serino's wider range of colors and textures allows him to create fantasy works in all different shades of blue and green.

The Future of the Artist Al Serino

While many young painters stop painting after earning their BFA, Al Serino plans to stick with the medium for the rest of his life. He wants to use his art as a means to understand the world around him and express his thoughts through his paintings. He is also interested in exploring other media, such as sculpture and collage. With his wide range of skills and experiences, Al Serino has a very bright future ahead of him as an artist.
